Easy instruments to make with your toddler

With Layla finally out of daycare, I am working through my list of 43 toddler activities so I won’t suck as a stay-at-home mom. We’ve been experiencing some unexpected hot weather in Vancouver, so when it’s too hot to play outside, we rock out to these homemade musical instruments.

Check them out:

Tambourine:

What you need:

  • Two disposable plates
  • A handful of dried pasta (I used elbow macaroni)
  • A stapler
  • Stickers, paint or crayons to decorate with

We decided to decorate with stickers as it’s less messy and Layla likes to take her time with them. Here’s how it turned out.

Drum:

What you need:

  • Coffee can
  • White paper
  • Tape
  • Stickers, paint or crayons to decorate with

Just cover the coffee can with a piece of white paper and get decorating! We decided to forgo the stickers this time as Layla ended up ripping them all off anyway. This time we just used crayons. The drumsticks are from our old Rock Band game and worked out perfectly. Check it out.

So we’ve tried these two out and Layla loves them. We’re planning an elastic guitar next 🙂
